So what I'm pissed about this time is the following: people who set up websites selling "historical" clothing that is not only recognizable as Simplicity or whatever pattern, but they use the frigging pictures from the pattern envelopes!
I've been cruising ebay to see what things similar to mine have been going for, and I'm crushed. This stuff is *nasty* And they have the -gall- to sell this stuff for upwards of $180??!!??!
Some of these people.. I'm sure that some of them are smart, responsible people, but I suspect that most of them are stay-at-home types who churn out these travesties while watching Jerry Springer, wondering when the show she's in will be on, waiting for the next disability check (since it's too much to ask that someone with chronic headaches come to work or something), won't do any research (thus leaving in all of the darts, zippers, snaps, and velcro that the patterns call for), and try to pass this stuff off as "historical" and "custom."
Bah.
I've pretty much decided that for the stuff I'm going to sell, I'm going to stick to original designs based on paintings. Not historically accurate, just historical in inspiration. Why, then, do I have a suspicion that my stuff is going to be a lot more accurate? *sigh*
Yeah, there are some accurate (and gorgeous!) things up on ebay, but the straw far overwhelms the few golden needles.
And corsets... ohmygod.
If it has lacing anywhere in it, it must be a corset. I'm amazed that I got any bids at all, since my stuff is far enough down the list, and most things up there are crap. I don't know why I keep looking, but I do. Trainwreck syndrome, I suppose.
Of course, at the same time, I'm totally excited, because ebay is cool as hell, but damn! There is some nasty-ass shit up there.
Later: I'm less pissed. Let me clarify this.. there is nothing wrong using patterns. I do it. But I rarely use them as is. I change them to make them more historically accurate, fit better, look better, whatever.
